What is a Wet Belt – and why is it important?

Wet timing belts are commonly found in vehicles from Ford, PSA Group (Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall) and Volkswagen Group, especially in EcoBoost, EcoBlue and PureTech engines. The timing belt is a vital component ensuring the engine runs smoothly and efficiently. Unlike traditional dry timing belts or chains, a wet belt operates inside the engine and is lubricated by engine oil. This design reduces wear, allows for quieter engine performance, and enhances overall efficiency. However, constant exposure to oil and high engine temperatures can cause the belt to degrade over time.

Most manufacturers typically recommend replacing the wet belt at around 60,000 miles or 6 years (Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall) or 100,000 miles or 10 years (Ford), but many mechanics are now advising a much earlier interval due to frequent premature failures.

The risks of Wet Belt failure

Degradation of the wet belt can lead to serious engine issues. Both the timing belt and oil pump drive belt can begin to delaminate, releasing debris into the engine oil and sump pan.
